New Works Festival

The submission period is now open. The first 50 plays received will be considered. The submission period ends December 1, 2022 or when 50 plays have been received.

Eligibility: Preference will be given to Playwrights who are Utah residents. Playwrights may submit one entry per festival.

Submission guidelines for original plays: Plays must be in English. Copy text must be 10-60 pages in length. Entries must be formatted in play format. Copy must be in a 12 pt. standard font with 1 inch margins. All pages must be numbered. Scripts should be submitted as PDF files. Please include a cover letter which includes a brief synopsis of the play as well as a brief bio of the author. musicals, dramas, comedies, children’s plays, and adaptations are accepted.  We will only consider shows under 45 minutes in length.

OPPA! must be granted rights to all scripts, music and materials at NO COST for the New Works! Festival. OPPA! retains the first right of refusal for full production in the 2024 season (OPPA! will pay playwright royalties at standard rate of other similar play/musical type for the full production during their season). OPPA!  may choose multiple to be fully produced or produce them as a staged reading during the festival.

No evaluations will be rendered for submitted entries.

Winner: Up to four finalists will be announced on Jan. 1, 2023

Winning entries will be featured in staged productions or staged readings between April 21-29, 2023.

OPPA! will select and provide director, cast, and minimal production needs. Playwright may attend production script reading and performances.Productions will be given a 20 hour rehearsal period. Minimal set, costume, props.
